Quote of the Day (1 year ago)

"Silver prices will firm up as industrial activity picks up owing to global cues and economic activity unleashed by the government. … We are bullish on silver rather than gold and expect it to touch Rs 62,000 a kg ($32.68 an ounce) in the coming months."
Prithviraj Kothari, managing director, Riddisiddhi Bullion in India.

ETF inflows will ‘force’ silver prices higher (1 year ago)

"It can only be a question of time before buoyant [exchange traded fund] demand causes the silver price to rise," commodities analysts at Commerzbank told ResourceInvestor. ETFs have seen record inflows since December pushing ETF holdings to 20,000 tonnes - an all-time record high. Those inflows translate into silver purchases, which should force silver prices higher.

2013 American Eagle silver coins sell out (1 year ago)

The US Mint sold out of 2013 American Eagle silver coins last week despite lower silver prices. Sales will be halted until Jan. 28. It’s interesting that retail demand for the coins is so high despite what feels like waning interest in the metal. It seems to indicate that no one believes the Fed will stop printing money.

Two triggers that would lead Fitch to downgrade U.S. debt (1 year ago)

Fitch is warning two triggers could lead it to downgrade the U.S.’s coveted triple-A bond rating:

  1. If Washington raises the debt ceiling without a plan to lower debt.
  2. If Washington skips out on any payments (including temporary delays in Social Security payments).

Let’s hope neither of those happen.

Real inflation 62 percent higher than reported over past decade (1 year ago)

The official government numbers don’t do justice to the actual inflation Americans are feeling in their pocketbooks. Peter Schiff and his research team did some independent research to prove just how much CPI manipulation is going on. This chart helps sum it up:

As you can see, CPI was actually pretty accurate between 1970 and 1980, according to Schiff’s research. Today’s manipulated numbers just aren’t accurate at all. Actual inflation is 62 percent higher over the past decade than reported, Schiff says.

Silver Wheaton earns average price target of $47.32 (1 year ago)

Apparently, analysts love Silver Wheaton’s (NYSE:SLW) shares. They have an average target price of $47.32 a share on the stock. That’s a 30 percent premium on the current price.

Why the hubbub? Silver Wheaton’s sales are expected to grow 26.9 percent in 2013 giving them a forward P/E ratio of 16.4. If silver prices rise quickly, this stock will, too.

US Mint raises silver coin prices $3 an ounce (1 year ago)

The five-ounce America the Beautiful silver coin will now cost $244.95 instead of $229.95. That’s a rise of $3 per ounce of silver.

“When pricing was established based on a given spot price for silver, US Mint silver numismatic products reflected those higher prices. However, as has been the practice over the last couple of years, we will continue to adjust prices from time to time to reflect the changing price of silver,” the Mint said in answer to an email about the price change.

Yen collapses to lowest level against gold in 32 years (1 year ago)

You need 149,588.2 yen to buy an ounce of gold. You’d need to go all the way back to 1980 to find the yen that weak (in inflation-adjusted terms). The nominal record for yen to gold still stands, though, at 204,850.

"Given the Japanese determination to devalue the yen to escape deflation, the record nominal high will almost certainly be reached in the next year or two."
